Candles are an essential element in any spell-work, serving as conduits for your intentions. Fire magic is a potent and transformative practice that can elevate your spells, and while candles hold their own power, by anointing your candles with specific oils and herbs, you can amplify your spell.

Below, I will share my advice and recommendations for how to dress your candle for spellwork – however, I urge you to remember, the key to effective candle dressing lies in your energy and intention. As you prepare your candle, infuse with it, your thoughts, desires and affirmations, and in turn, this will transform your candle into a powerful tool for manifestation.

Why Dress a Candle for Spellwork?

Dressing your candle in preparation for spells and rituals refers to rubbing a candle in oil and rolling it in herbs – the selection of oils and herbs is to support the intention you’re working with.

With this purpose in mind, I have crafted a Dressed Candle for a renewal ritual for the Ostara to demonstrate.

Firstly, we must cleanse the candle to ensure there are no lingering energies. To illustrate, I have chosen to use a sage smudge stick, as it purifies and prepares the space.

However, feel free to use salt, sound or any other cleansing tool that resonates with you – it must be remembered that you select a method that feels right, allowing you to set a clear intention as you prepare you candle for spellwork.

After that, take your chosen dried flowers and herbs, and grind them into a rough blend. In this example, I have chosen chamomile, lemon balm, honeysuckle and rose.

This does not need to be perfect. Once this is completed, put your flower and herb blend aside for a moment.

Taking your oil, you will then anoint your candle. Start by rubbing the oil from the top to the middle of the candle, and then from bottom to middle – this motion encourages amplifies your invitation of something new into your life. Be sure to clearly state your intention and focus on it while anointing your candle.

When it comes to choosing the right oil, note that you can choose a neutral oil that acts as a vehicle for your herbs. On the other hand, you may want to use an oil that brings its own amplifying qualities for dressing the candle – in this case, I have selected to use a small batch essential oil I purchased from a local seller, Ritual Reverie’s.

This Goddess Oil carries the vibrations of love, wisdom and strength.

As soon as you finish anointing the candle with oil, retrieve your herb and flower blend, and scatter a thick layer across your working surface.

Then, roll your candles in the mix, coating the candles as much as you can, together with your intentions and manifestations in mind.

Do not fret if it is not an even coat – perfection is not the goal.

Furthermore, you have yourself a small collection of dressed candles for your spellwork at your disposal. With this in mind, when you light your candle, always stay with it until it burns completely, not only for safety, but also for the integrity of your spell or ritual.
